  23. COMMENT The Guide Star Catalog (GSC) was prepared by the Space Telescope Science
  24. COMMENT Institute (ST ScI),  3700 San Martin Drive,  Baltimore,  MD 21218,  USA.
  25. COMMENT ST ScI  is  operated  by the Association of Universities for Research in
  26. COMMENT Astronomy, Inc. (AURA), under contract with the National Aeronautics and
  27. COMMENT Space Administration (NASA).

  33. COMMENT The  adopted  catalog  organization  divides the sky into large regions,
  34. COMMENT approximately 7.5 deg in size, which  are  then  subdivided  into  small
  35. COMMENT regions  on  the basis of their expected individual stellar populations;
  36. COMMENT each small region corresponds to one file of the GSC.  Some details  are
  37. COMMENT given in the comments to file REGIONS; and a full description, including
  38. COMMENT the region counting rules, may be found in Paper III.                   
  39. COMMENT                                                                         
  40. COMMENT All  information  needed  to  associate a point on the sky with a region
  41. COMMENT file is given in file REGIONS.  However, files  LR_REG_X,  which  is  an
  42. COMMENT index to the large regions, and SM_REG_X, which is an index to the small
  43. COMMENT regions,  are provided to support a more rapid search algorithm based on
  44. COMMENT the  geometric  arrangement  of  the regions and their numbering conven-
  45. COMMENT tions.                                                                  
  46. COMMENT                                                                         
  47. COMMENT File  LG_REG_X  gives,  for each declination band DEC_CTR, the number of
  48. COMMENT the first large region F_LG_REG in the band  and  the  number  of  large
  49. COMMENT regions N_LG_REG therein. Similarly, file SM_REG_X gives, for each large
  50. COMMENT region  LG_REG_N,  the number F_SM_REG of the first small region and the
  51. COMMENT level  of  subdivision  of  the  large  region  DEPTH.   Then,  for  any
  52. COMMENT coordinate,  two  simple  indexing procedures are sufficient to identify
  53. COMMENT the large region number and then, obtaining  the  level  to  which  that
  54. COMMENT region  is  subdivided  from  the  small  region table, the small region
  55. COMMENT number which bears a one-to-one correspondence with the name  of  a  GSC
  56. COMMENT file.  One need also to note that the first large region in the southern
  57. COMMENT hemisphere is 367.
